Position Paper Topic A

Topic: Establishing and enforcing wage parity between genders
Country: Argentina
Committee: CSW
Delegate: Valeria Sagaon
School: Colegio Ingles

Parity between genders affects all human behavior in the entire world. Gender equality is measurable equal representation of women and men. The CSW works to make both genders able to have equally contributed, and to have the same benefit from economic, social, cultural and political developments within the society. Gender equality does not imply that women and men are the same, but that they have equal value and should be accorded equal treatment and equal payment. Equal pay for equal work is one of the areas where gender equality is rarely seen; all too often women are paid less than men for doing the same job. Women and men usually have different roles and responsibilities in their daily work. Men tend to do more and heavier work than woman, usually located outside of the home. Women have the main responsibility of taking car of children, and providing food for the family. Women often have unequal access to education and health services. One of the most seen problems in all the world is were woman are affected to the access to health centers and the existence of jubilations pensions for woman in the rural area.

In Argentina there has been an increase in both the number and percentage of women in politics. My delegation believes that there are equal rights, and an example of it is that Argentina’s president is a woman and she has been reelected. Their election has, in turn, generated a renewed debate on the state of women in politics today in the region. Women's civil liberties are well respected in Argentina, The Argentine Constitution guarantees the equality of both genders and prohibits any form of discrimination against woman. In development cities like Argentina there has been big advances with gender equality, the participation of woman in the market has high during the last years in 1980 it was 29% now we are 53%. 50% of this work has been done by Argentina according to the international organization of work.

As gender equality has been a problem in almost all the world, poor working conditions and low wages continue to affect women’s labor my delegation’s solutions are to suggest to establish polices on gender and employment and set gender issues as priorities in the agendas of public institutions promoting to be a minimum limit of payment so there can be equality between woman and men. Another solution is to increase public awareness by exposing the problem of gender equality in employment, through media campaigns and publications, putting them on Internet. This will work for people to see how wage parity between genders is happening and see how unequal payment affects woman. One of the most principal ways to contribute with gender equality is women to have power and to fight for jobs that usually the men do. People should have a coordinator and establish a committee that will help to have wage parity between gender equality.
